Assu Localities Map Localities List
Located 210km from Natal, Assu has had several names since its foundation, such as ‘Arraial de Santa Margarida’, ‘Arraial Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres’ and ‘Vila Nova da Princesa’, this last one in honor to Carlota Joaquina, princess of Portugal. A large number of poets were born in Assu. Because of that, many people call it ‘the Athens of Rio Grande do Norte’. Furthermore, it produces and exports tropical fruits to many countries. In June, people from Assu celebrate the day of São João Batista, patron of the city. Assu carnival is also famous, considered one of the best in the State.
