Arez Localities Map Localities List
The Borough of Arez is located on the Eastern Coast of Rio Grande do Norte. It has an area of 115 km², and it is 25km away from Natal. History tells the name ‘Arez’ was given by Portuguese settlers in honor to a village in Portugal called Alentejo. Arez means ‘master´s tooth’, it is maybe related to a very old god. It was initially an Indian settlement, whose chief was called Jacumaúma. The Dutch invaders were the first white men to inhabited the region of Arez. They occupied an island at Guaraíras Lake (Flamengo Island), where they built a fort. On January 06th of 1648 the Portuguese settlers threw out the Dutch from the Island.
